Mathias medals in win

GENEVA — The
Jay County High School
golf team has ridden the play of senior Evan Mathias all season.
Mathias bested South Adams senior Cal Clouser by one stroke, shooting a 3-over-par 38 to earn match medalist honors as the Patriots beat the host Starfires 177-191 Thursday at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Austin Wendel shot a 44 for the Patriots’ No. 2 score. Jay Houck was one stroke behind Wendel, and Zach Fullenkamp posted a round of 50.
Clouser, who birdied the par-3 sixth hole, shot a 39 to lead South Adams. Derek Fox scored a 45, Jacob Rife had a 51 and Brad Green rounded out the Starfires’ team score with a 56.
Mathias bogeyed the 416-yard, par-4 10th hole, but recovered to make birdie on the par-5 11th. He shot even on the next two holes, before closing out his round with alternating bogeys and pars.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team also beat the Starfires, 205-238.
Collin Saxman and Nick Hayden led Jay County scores of 47 and 49 respectively. Kyler Hudson (52) and Sok Vormohr (57) closed out the team score for the Patriots.
Corbin Swygart (55), Jared Grabau (57), Lucas Bluhm (61) and Marcus Teeter (65) scored for South Adams.
JC track takes 1st
MUNCIE — The Jay County girls track team closed out its 2014 season with a commanding win Thursday over Marion and Muncie Central.
The Patriots (26-2) earned the victory by scoring 90 points. Marion was second with 37 and the host Bearcats were third with 26.
On the boys side, 1.5 points separated the three teams, with the Patriots scoring 57.5 points to secure a win. Marion (56.5) was second, and Muncie Central (56) finished third.
Hannah Lykins, Malarie Houck and Ciera Barcus all picked up a pair of individual wins for the Patriots. Lykins threw the furthest in the shot put and discus, Houck won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Barcus was victorious in the long jump and high jump.
Amber Huelskamp (800 run) and Emi Minnich (3,200 run) also won their respective events for Jay County.
For the Patriot boys, Jalen Ryder was the only dual-event winner, finishing first in the 800 and 1,600 runs. Jay County also got an individual win from Zane Shreve in the 300 hurdles.
J.D. Mangas and Matt Blackford teamed up with Ryder and Shreve to win the 4x400 relay, and joined Sean Winget and Cory Robertson to win the 4x100.
